This Week with Incarnation Teens

Posted on October 31st, 2008 in Incarnation Teens by Derek Rotty

Thanks to all of the youth who helped me celebrate my birthday this past Wednesday night!  I now have mashed potatoes for a year!  Yummy!

I promise that the pictures will return next week, because I have now found the camera that I misplaced a couple of weeks ago.  Hooray!

REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS

Solemnity of All Souls (Commemoration of the Faithful Departed): Wisdom 3:1-9; Psalm 23:1-6; Romans 5:5-11; John 6:37-40

The readings that you will hear at Mass this coming weekend are powerful reminders of Jesus Christ's sacrifice.  He came and gave His life for everyone, even those of us who aren't as holy as we ought to be.  But, that does not mean that we can take God's gift (salvation through Christ's ultimate sacrifice) for granted.

Friends, it is necessary to rely on God's wisdom and mercy all the days of our life.  We must seek His will, and we must seek out the Sacrament of Reconciliation when we fail to do His will.  If we follow that plan faithfully from this day forward, we can have great hope that we will enter into heavenly glory.

FINAL THOUGHT

Which would you rather wear: a cowboy hat with huge rhinestones or pilgrims' shoes?

Wisdom 3:1-9

1But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them.
2In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery:
3And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace.
4And though in the sight of men they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality.
5Afflicted in few things, in many they shall be well rewarded: because God hath tried them, and found them worthy of himself.
6As gold in the furnace he hath proved them, and as a victim of a holocaust he hath received them, and in time there shall be respect had to them.
7The just shall shine, and shall run to and fro like sparks among the reeds.
8They shall judge nations, and rule over people, and their Lord shall reign for ever.
9They that trust in him, shall understand the truth: and they that are faithful in love shall rest in him: for grace and peace is to his elect.

2He hath set me in a place of pasture. He hath brought me up, on the water of refreshment:

4For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they have comforted me.
5Thou hast prepared a table before me against them that afflict me. Thou hast anointed my head with oil; and my chalice which inebriateth me, how goodly is it!
6And thy mercy will follow me all the days of my life. And that I may dwell in the house of the Lord unto length of days.

5And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost, who is given to us.
6For why did Christ, when as yet we were weak, according to the time, die for the ungodly?
7For scarce for a just man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die.
8But God commendeth his charity towards us; because when as yet we were sinners, according to the time,
9Christ died for us; much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him.
10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
11And not only so; but also we glory in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received reconciliation.

37All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.
38Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day.
40And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day.

This Week with Incarnation Teens

Posted on October 24th, 2008 in Incarnation Teens by Derek Rotty

What more is there to say than another week has gone by?  I could say that this has been an excellent week!  I could say that I am now four days away from entering my "late twenties."  I will say that I continue to be amazed by God's love and grace, which I see every day of my life!  I do hope that all of you who read this will continue to grow closer to Jesus Christ and become holy!

[This is the place where I would normally post a couple of pictures, but I haven't taken any pictures in a few weeks.  My bad!]

REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Exodus 22:20-26; Psalm 18; 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10; Matthew 22:34-40

God desires that each of us becomes "a model for all the believers."  He wants us to be cleansed of our attachment to idols (including modern things like bad music, television, and movies), receive His Word, and imitate Him.  Indeed, Jesus tells us in the Gospel passage that the greatest commandment is to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind.  When such a transformation begins to happen in our lives, God will deliver us from harm; and we will be able to look forward with joy to living in Heaven forever!

Thanks be to God that He allows us to turn from sin and continually try to become holy.

Serving Those Around Us

Posted on October 16th, 2008 in Service Projects by Derek Rotty

I received a note in my parish mailbox yesterday, and I couldn't have been prouder to be associated with such a great group of teenagers!

Thank you to all of you who helped collect items fro both Project Outreach and Missionaries of Charity.

Thursday, October 9th, we were able to give food to forty families in Fayette County.  This is so important as many in this community are very, very poor.

Tuesday, October 7th, we were at the Missionaries of Charity to feed women and children.  They were almost at full capacity that evening.  As you can imagine they were thrilled to get not only food, but toiletries too.

You can be proud of your donations to both of these charities, both in continuous need of help.

Thank you again for doing a service project for both of these charities.

Because we had nearly twenty youth and almost half that many adults, some of the poorest and neediest people in our region received physical and spiritual help!  I pray that God will bless the people who were served as well as the people who did the serving!

God bless!

This Week with Incarnation Teens

Posted on October 16th, 2008 in Incarnation Teens by Derek Rotty

Fall Break is over…sadness.  But, that means that we can all come back together for fellowship, and we can grow closer to Christ!  It also means that the best season of the year is upon us…fall!

Last night's ENCOUNTER was incredible!  We had great music, great food, and great fellowship!  I can't wait to do something like that again!

In the mean time…

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Isaiah 45:1,4-6; Psalm 96; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b; Matthew 22:15-21

The words of the prophet Isaiah are meant to remind readers and listeners that God's call is the one of highest significance.  Yes, God has "called you by your name, giving you a title."  He wants people to remember that nothing in this world is as important as Him; that He alone can make the sun rise and set.  So, as Jesus proclaims in the Gospel: we must give to God "what belongs to God."

What belongs to God?  EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE AND EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE!

17Tell us therefore what dost thou think, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

19Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny.

The cost of the event is $10 per individual, which includes hot dogs, smores, a camp fire, and a hay ride.  The last day to sign up for the event is Monday, October 20.  Contact the Office of Youth Ministry via phone or email.

5And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost, who is given to us.

Have a Great Break!

Posted on October 10th, 2008 in General Youth Ministry by Derek Rotty

Since the county schools begin their Fall Break this weekend, there will be no youth ministry activities until Wednesday, October 15.

I pray that all of you and your families take some time to relax and recharge.  I pray that everyone comes back energized and ready to encounter Christ through youth ministry!

Until next week, take a look at the "What's Next?" list at the bottom of the left-hand column.  I look forward to seeing everyone very soon!

God bless!

Fun in the Fall!

Posted on October 10th, 2008 in General Youth Ministry by Derek Rotty

Last weekend, 45 members of our group (adults and youth) went to the Diocese of Memphis Fall Youth Gathering at Chickasaw State Park.  The weekend included icebreaker games, team competitions (tug-of-war, ultimate frisbee, capture-the-flag etc.), a cookout and campfire, and Mass.  As always, it was so much fun to be a part of such a great group of people!

Click here to see more pictures from the Fall Youth Gathering.

The youth ministers of the diocese have already started planning for next year's gathering.  I know that it will be just as great!
