Thankful for Bob

Uncategorized No Comments »
Lately I've really been thinking about people who have touched my life.  I'm not sure why exactly…maybe so I can pray for them and be thankful for them?  Whatever the reason, I know that without them, I wouldn't be the person I am today.  The funny thing is, I'm not sure many of them realize how much they meant to my life and faith, although I've had a chance to tell a few.  One of those people is Bob Rice.

Bob was an adult leader in my youth group when I was in high school.  Bob and I were never really close, but I did look up to him and admire him greatly.  He had this enthusiasm and charisma that was contagious, and he was so creative and original that people were drawn to him.  He wasn't afraid to be himself in front of us, as so many adults were.  By his actions, he basically said, "Hi!  I'm Bob, I love Jesus, and I want you to love Him, too."  In so many ways, it rubbed off on me.

Thankfully I had a chance to see Bob again last year, and it was amazing.  He's still the same Bob (only a little wiser).  It amazed me that he still has the same enthusiasm and charisma, the same creativity and originality.  I'm really thankful for Bob and his ministry, for sharing his talents and passion for the Lord with everyone he meets!  Check out this video and maybe you'll see what I mean.

Make a Messenger Bag

So I haven't posted in a while, mostly because I've had very little to say (that would be interesting).  But tonight, while looking for a new messenger bag, I found this video on how to make your own!  Granted, I don't have the talent it takes to actually do this, but I know some of you do (Hey, if you can make a duct tape wallet, you can make this)!  I'm amazed at some people's creativity…

Can You Hear Him?

Uncategorized No Comments »
One of today's readings offers a great example of why it is so important to quiet ourselves and listen for God.  In 1 Kings 19:11-13, God tells Elijah to meet Him on the mountain.  Elijah does so, and witnesses a great wind, an earthquake, and fire, but God wasn't in any of them.  He came in a tiny whispering sound.

When we pray, how often are we waiting for God to reveal Himself (or His work in our lives) in a loud, grand fashion?  How often are we waiting for some kind of huge, miraculous sign that shows how great our Lord is?  If we are, we might be waiting for a while.  We need to quiet ourselves and be ready to hear God and notice Him, or we could miss what He's trying to tell us.  That's why it's so important to spend time in prayer every day…not just talking, but also listening.  We have to put away our distractions and turn everything else off, and truly allow ourselves to be in God's presence.  This isn't easy– trust me, I know.  But God is worth our time and effort– as much as it takes!  (And there are so many different forms of prayer!  If one doesn't seem to "work" for you, try another.  How about trying meditative or contemplative prayer?  Or the Rosary?  Or Lectio Divina?)

My prayers are with you, as always.  If you ever have questions about prayer, just ask!

12And after the earthquake a fire: the Lord is not in the fire, and after the fire a whistling of a gentle air.
13And when Elias heard it, he covered his face with his mantle, and coming forth stood in the entering in of the cave, and behold a voice unto him, saying: What dost thou here, Elias? And he answered:

Summer, Bible Study, and Doing Work!

Uncategorized No Comments »

It's summer, which usually means life slows down for a little while…well, at least when we're still in school.  For those of you living the lazy life right now, I hope you are loving it!  For those that aren't, I feel your pain.

Summer usually means Bible study in our group, too.  I'm not sure why…maybe the unreasonably hot weather creates a chemical reaction in our brains that makes us want to want to learn more about our Lord during the summer.  (Granted, I can't prove this theory, but it works for me.)  Anyway, I just wanted to thank all of you for the lively debate on chapter 6 of John's Gospel last week.  I had fun listening, and had a hard time keeping my mouth shut (in case you didn't notice).  I'm thinking maybe we should do something similar this week– what do you think?  Anything specific you want to delve into?

And who can think of summer without thinking of Heart Workcamp?  I'm getting really excited, and it's hard to believe it's coming up so soon.  In preparation, I'm doing work (son!) to prepare myself.  Or at least, I'm attempting to do work.  If you didn't already know, we had a pipe burst a couple months ago.  The leak was fixed and the walls were treated and dried, but there is still repair work that needs to be done.  A lot of it is easy, like patching the walls, but I didn't think about the baseboard being a problem.  Actually, it's not a problem yet since I haven't started on it, but the idea of trying to match the molding and then cut it at the proper angles is not motivating me to start.  So if you see me wandering aimlessly around Home Depot, you'll know why.  Maybe we could start Workcamp a day early at my house! Wink

Hope all is well with everyone!  You're in my prayers.

Amazed

Uncategorized No Comments »
The last sentence of today's Gospel reading (Mark 12:17) is one I love: "They were utterly amazed at Him."  (I doubt the Pharisees and Herodians were utterly amazed in the same way I am.)  Christ amazes me so much, often in ways that I wasn't expecting.  But sometimes it can be difficult to actually "see" what He's doing in our lives.  Maybe it's because we look at what hasn't happened, or what we don't have, or we just ignore His intercession in our lives.  Then again, maybe we don't see it yet because it is still unfolding.  For example, when you read a book, you discover how the story unfolds through the whole book.  Sure, there are revelations throughout as the author uses all of the characters and events, chapter by chapter, to lead us to the end.  Imagine if the author revealed EVERYTHING right at the beginning of the book…would you still want to read it?  Would it even make sense?

Maybe we should see our lives like books, and let the story unfold in God's time.  Because just like a great novel, there are often many twists and turns that we must take to get to where we're going.  Today, ask Jesus to amaze you, and then let Him do it!  Bye

Almost Done!

I've been kind of "uncreative" the past few days, which is why there haven't been any new posts.  I think of things, then one of three things happen: A) I forget what the idea was (which probably means it wasn't very good); 2) I start to blog an idea, then feel really stupid and end up deleting it; C) It just doesn't seem all that interesting.

But one thing that has been on my mind a lot the last few days is that most of you are almost done with school for the year.  I remember being in high school (WAY back in the day) and that excited/anxious feeling that came with the end of the year… Excited because school was ALMOST done, and 3 months of playtime were just around the corner.  Anxious because school WASN'T done yet, and finals were staring me in the face like a giant bully that wouldn't go away.  (It seems like I always had at least one class that my grade was on the border, so doing well on the final really meant something.  I'm getting nervous just thinking about it… I wouldn't want to experience it EVER again!)

Those memories are all the encouragement I need to pray for you now more than I usually do.  I'm praying for God to give you the wisdom, courage, motivation, and strength to do your very best and make it through these last few days before summer break.  Hang in there! Wink

Pray for Our Priests

Uncategorized No Comments »

Today's post will be short, but no less important.

Please keep our priests in your prayers.  These are men who have dedicated their lives to serve God (and us).  I think because they are so giving we often forget to think of their needs, which is a shame, because I don't even want to think about what our faith would look like without them.

You're in my prayers!

The Faith of a Jedi

(Ok, so it only took me a week to let my love of Star Wars come through…but you had to know it was coming.)

Over the last few months Spike TV has shown a Star Wars movie each Sunday night.  Normally I don't like watching movies on TV because of the editing and commercials, but I can watch Star Wars anytime, anyplace.  A few weeks ago Episode I was on, and I caught the part where Qui-Gon, Obi-Won, and the others are stranded on a planet they need to leave.  They are unsuccessful in getting parts for their damaged ship, and the situation seems hopeless because they have no money and nothing to trade for the parts they need.  Just then, Qui-Gon says to Obi-Won, "Another solution will present itself."

The phrase has been rattling around in my head ever since.  It was such a perfect expression of faith.  When everything seems hopeless and there doesn't seem to be any way things will work out, we have to look to God and remember that with Him, another solution will present itself.  I've lived it so many times, yet I still have trouble giving God the big stuff.  For some strange reason I forget that I am finite, and He is not; that I see only what's in front of me, and He sees entirety.  Why worry or stress knowing that God is in control?

We need to remember that God is always working in us and through us, and that sometimes He has plans in mind that are much greater than we can possibly imagine.  Trusting this, even when logic and reason tell us otherwise, is the key to faith.  When times are tough, remember that with God, "Another solution will present itself."

I Love James

Uncategorized 3 Comments »

I was just doing the daily readings for today, and it's funny how much the book of James speaks to me.  There are definitely some books of the Bible that I feel more "connected" to than others, and James is at the top of that list.  Actually, all of today's readings spoke to my heart, but particularly in James 4:6– "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."  I read that verse 3 times because I felt like God wanted to me to know it.

I am proud by nature.  I have a hard time biting my tongue.  I have a hard time admitting I when I am wrong.  But when I look at Jesus I feel so ashamed.  I once read where St. Padre Pio said that Jesus came to fight, humble Himself, and die.  That, in itself, is humbling to me.  God was here to show us how to live, and He allowed us to humiliate Him.  He allowed us to cause suffering.  He could've said, "You know what?  I'm sick of all of you arrogant, selfish, self-righteous, prideful, sinful people!  I'm going back up to heaven.  Good luck."  But He didn't.  He didn't abandon us; He stayed with us and gave us the greatest gift of love we will ever receive.  He humbled Himself and died to that we might live.  You want to know what love is?  You want to know what to look for in a friend?  Look no further.

How is God asking you to be humble?  Is He asking you to make peace with someone, which might mean humbling yourself?  Today, and everyday, I will pray for the strength and courage to be humble, knowing that God is with me.

p.s. If you want to find the daily readings, go to www.lifeteen.com and you will see them on the left side of the page under "Daily Devotional." (And if you decide to do today's readings, think about the Psalm.  Have you ever felt that way?)
